Elevation and power are both important in highland dancing. Here is an exercise to work on just that! All you need is a set of stairs, I used a small box to make it easier to film and a bit more challenging. Transfer your weight towards the foot on the step and push off, straightening your knee and even trying to point your foot if you want more of a challenge. You can do this with your foot straight ahead. Check out your alignment as you land and take off as well! Try 8-10 on each side, 2 sets.

Need to work on half point strength? Try this exercise! Place a resistance band right above your big toe joint and then around your other foot. Put your working foot in second position on the ball far enough away so there is some resistance. Now go onto the half point keeping your foot centered and push your foot into the band. Here is an exercise to work on turnout during extensions along with general hip and thigh strength. Try to keep your hips level as you carry the extension from fourth to second.
