While a regular Camaro offered eight engines during the first model year, the SS came with just two: the small-block 350 CID (5.7 liters) or the High-performance 396 CID (6.4 liters) big-block.

The same basic engine is rated at 175 hp when installed in the Monte Carlo SS, which actually received the powerplant before the Camaro.
